It's Not Just About You

Firearms Training

In western Côte d'Ivoire - the Ivory Coast in Africa - rape often goes unpunished. Residents of the area say, "We hear of two, three, four rapes every day."

"Rapes are encouraged," a citizen said.  "Because there is no punishment."  In some cases women who reported rape are harassed by authorities. Very few alleged attackers are convicted, and if they are, they are usually released after a short time in jail. It is sickening, really, to hear these stories. Here, in the United States, rapists are punished. Sadly, punishment has yet to completely stop rapes from happening.

Franklin "Mo-Mo" Owalecio, 56, was arrested last week for rape. The victim knew Owalecio for thirteen years, and he convinced her on October 24 to meet with him in a motel room for drinks. After getting her drunk, he forced himself on top of her, beat her and threw her across the room. She managed to grab her cell phone and dialed 9-1-1, but Owalecio caught wind of this and snatched the phone from her. Fortunately for her, the call had already gone through, so police were able to track the ended phone call.

There is no excuse for rape. It is a heinous crime that no woman, man or child should have to suffer.  Front Sight Firearms Training Institute, located near Las Vegas, Nevada, makes it possible to learn how to prevent it. Dr. Ignatius Piazza, founder and director of Front Sight offers various courses in self defense training, either with or without weapons.  People can take gun training classes such as handgun training, rifle training, shotgun training or automatic weapons training (UZI Submachine Gun training and Select Fire M16 training), or they can take courses in other kinds of weaponry, like an edged weapons training class (knife training).  Front Sight also has empty hands self defense training courses such as martial arts training and defensive driving training. To protect the little ones, Dr. Ignatius Piazza offers two courses for younger people - child safety training and youth safety training - and both provide age appropriate self defense education and training so that kids and parents can both feel safer.

Rape affects more than just the victim. The victim's family and friends become victims themselves. Think about the story of Franklin Owalecio. His victim was someone's daughter.  Now think about your children. What if it were your daughter? Wouldn't you want her to be able to defend herself? If you do not have children, think about your brother or your sister. If you are an only child, think about your parents, or your neighbors, or your neighbor's children. How would you feel if any of these people were attacked?  Front Sight Firearms Training Institute gives everyone an equal opportunity to learn proper self defense techniques so that they can feel confident in themselves and safe in the face of danger. If you do not want to do it for yourself, think about your family and friends. How would your children feel if you were raped? How would your parents feel?  Do you want them to feel that pain?  Everyone should learn self defense, because it is not just about a single person. It is about everyone around them, too.
